What pushed me to college

About a year before college I was working at P&G for the sheet metal union out of Dayton, Oh. I was pushed into the job by my parents because it was a good paying job and they knew a few foremen, so it was  a cake job that payed well. All I did was sit around and watch people work and i made twelve twelve an hour. If i would have stuck with it for five years I would have been making twenty five dollars an hour although I would have been the one being watched working. I went three months working out a P&G until i had an accident. I was drilling a hole in a quarter inch thick piece of metal when the drill caught onto a bolt on the other side of the metal. It was jerked out of my hand, and spun around, and hit me in the mouth. There was blood everywhere, and I thought I completely lost my tooth. Luckily it only chipped my tooth in half, but I still had to get nine stitches in my bottom lip. After this freak accident I worked this job for another week until i finally quit. I no longer wanted to be anywhere near a construction site and I did not want to work for a gas station or a fast food restaurant. Although I did not want to go back to school. The fear of having a dead-end job pushed me in that direction. Four months after my accident I went to Rhodes State and did the "one stop" promotion. Although the financial aid gave me and my family a headache we got everything done and I started school the following fall.

  1. Dang, that must of scared the crap out of you, what did your parents have to say? I’m glad to hear that you were ok and that you have decided to go back to school. You will see in the long run that you will have a better chance at life. Just think of all the opportunities that are out there for you when you get done with school. Have you decided on what you want to do yet? . Just curries. I know that you said that you don’t want to work in factories anymore. Are your parents supportive of you going to school instead of working are did they want you to do both. How are you liking it so for is it everything that u you thought it would be? For me it is so much harder that I thought it would be. I thought that I would be able to get all my homework done at school so that it did not interfere with my home life, wrong. I find myself stressed out every day that I walk through my door at home. It’s always a rush to get my son to get his homework done then off to making dinner. By the time I get the dishes done the kids bathed and ready for bed it’s 10 or 11 at night. Then I’m up till about 1p.m. working on my homework, but I’m going to make it somehow some way. Well I’m at the 255 mark now so I’ll let you go have a good day.

  2. Wow it is so crazy how one experience can change somebodies life. The crazy part is I bet you thought you had your life all planned out and was a comfort zone. Now your life has completely changed, and I believe it is for the better. With your determination you will graduate college and find a career you will love. Way better than having to work a job you don’t love for your whole life. I feel as if I am experiencing what you feel right now. I had it all planned out to go to Rhodes to be a Physical Therapist Assistant, but now I am thinking about changing to nursing. I feel as if I get a funny feeling in my stomach every time I think about my future. I feel will time and research I will find my right future career.

When I think about a career change I think about my dad. My dad was a welder at Crown, a job he did not mind. He always thought he could find something better with better pay so he applied to General Dynamics. He got notice he was accepted to the schooling part of General Dynamics, but that did not mean he had the job. To continue on at General Dynamics had to quit his previous job, and this was the main financial supplier for my family. After going through the schooling he got the job, which he loves now. He later told me there were some days he didn’t know he would pass, but with the gumption to care for his family he knew he had to. I guess what I am trying to say is you have to take a chance to get a reward!
